MISEC Natural Gas Program
The Michigan Schools Energy Cooperate (MISEC) Natural Gas Program helps the Michigan educational community control natural gas costs and assists in reaching natural gas budget goals. The MISEC goal is to provide the lowest cost, reliable supply of natural gas. We will provide accurate, unbiased information regarding all of your energy needs. MISEC works for you, not the utility or supplier.
Over 240 member districts and community colleges participate in a MISEC Natural Gas Program.
Who can participate?
The MISEC Natural Gas Program is open to Michigan K-12 public schools and community colleges. Michigan natural gas utilities have two types of deregulated rate options: Transportation Gas and Gas Customer Choice (GCC). With MISEC’s assistance, you choose the natural gas program that best fits your district’s energy needs.
The MISEC Natural Gas Program currently includes districts that are served by the utilities Consumers Energy, DTE/MichCon, SEMCo, MGU and Exelon.
Savings Analysis
MISEC will perform a Savings Analysis for each district facility before a district commits to participate in the Natural Gas Program. The analysis will be based on historical usage, current utility and natural gas supply costs. The analysis will show the district’s true projected savings by participating in the Natural Gas Program.

MISEC Electric Program
The Michigan Schools Energy Cooperate (MISEC) Electric Program helps the Michigan educational community control electric costs and assists in reaching electric budget goals. The MISEC goal is to provide the lowest cost, reliable supply of electricity. We will provide accurate, un-biased information regarding all of your energy needs. MISEC works for you, not the utility or supplier.
Over 160 member districts and community colleges participate in the MISEC Electric Program. This includes nearly 1000 meters.
Who can participate?
The MISEC Electric Program is open to Michigan K-12 public schools and community colleges that are served by the utilities Consumers Energy and Detroit Edison. We are currently looking into the savings potential for districts served by the utility American Electric Power (AEP). As of today, if you are served by a municipality or cooperatively owned utility you do not have a deregulated electric rate option, and are therefore, unable to participate in the MISEC Electric Program.
Please note that in 2008 the State of Michigan passed a law (PA286) that implemented a 10% cap on electric competition. Both Consumers Energy and DTE have maxed out or hit their 10% cap some time ago, so as of today no new electric accounts can start.
What can my district do if the cap is maxed out or full?
In that Detroit Edison and Consumers Energy have reached the 10% cap on customers that can buy their energy from an alternative supplier, they have a waiting list or queue of customers that want to leave their respective utilities if and when space becomes available. When space does become available it is based on first come, first served.
MISEC can assist your district in enrolling your electric accounts in your utilities queue. Once enrolled there is absolutely no commitment or obligation on your part. When the utility gives notice that accounts in the queue can start, MISEC will begin the process of arranging for supply. If, for whatever reason, it does not make sense to start all or any of the accounts, we would let the utility know that you are no longer interested and refuse the capacity…no harm, no foul.
